We have special guest speakers Dr. Ahmad Deeb, Dr. Omar Shareef and Sr. Alaa Shareef joining us for the weekend inshAllah!
Imam Ahmad Deeb has been serving communities from an early age under the training and mentorship of his father, shaykh Abdallah Deeb. He had a degree in Psychology, completed formal seminary training in Cape Town, and holds an M.A. in Islamic Studies and Leadership at Bayan. Imam Deeb is a doctoral candidate and researcher in community psychology as wel. He is President of Itqaan Institute, a premier Qur'an learning institute led by his father. Currently, he is co-founder and teacher at Pillars Seminary—a part-time institute which provides formal, balanced and structured training in Islam to the general public, as well as the co-founder and Imam of Shifaa Community. In his free time, he continues his study of the Islamic tradition with scholars across the world and provides organizational consulting to communities across the country.
Dr. Omar Shareef is a Community Educator at The Family and Youth Institute. He has an MD and MBA dual-degree graduate from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He completed general psychiatry residency at Nassau University Medical Center, completed both Public Psychiatry Fellowship, and has certification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at Columbia University. He currently practices at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens, NY. Omar is a certified Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor, and is a member of the HEAL Collective, a NY-based nonprofit dedicated to Muslim mental health.
Alaa Mohammad Shareef received her Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology as well as her Masters of Education degree in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College at Columbia University. She holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and additional certifications in Childhood & Adolescence Studies and Cultures & Communities Studies. She is formally trained in Arabic from Al Qasid Institute in Amman, Jordan. In the past Alaa has served on the Islamic Society of Milwaukee’s (ISM) Education Team as well as the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition (MMWC) as a Curriculum Developer. She currently provides mental health counseling in the state of NY to clients from diverse backgrounds and ages dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, divorce, trauma, family discord, and narcissism. Alaa also serves as an Arabic Interventionist, Presenter, and Trainer for Cornerstone’s Refugee Resilience program led by the International Rescue Committee (IRC). With The FYI, Alaa is a researcher and community educator focusing on Muslim mental health curriculum development, advocacy and literacy. Her research on the Islamic history of Mental Health has led to her contributions as one of the leading authors for a Springer chapter titled Mental Health in the Islamic Golden Era: The Historical Roots of Modern Psychiatry.
